This is a novel about a man's lifelong efforts to atone for an act of instinctive cowardice. Young Jim, chief mate of the Patna, dreams of being a hero. He has taken to the seas with the hopes of adventure and the chance to prove his mettle. When the Patna threatens to sink and the cowardly officers decide to save their own skins and escape in the few lifeboats, Jim despises them. But at the last moment, dazed by horror and confusion, he joins them, deserting the eight hundred Muslim passengers to apparent death.
Tormented by this act of cowardice and desertion, Jim flees west after being stripped of his rank. Living among the natives in Patusan, a remote trading post in the jungle, he is able to cease sacrificing himself on the altar of conscience. When he defends Patusan against the evil "Gentleman Brown," his efforts create order and well-being, thereby winning the respect and affection of the people for whom he becomes Tuan, or Lord Jim.
With its rich descriptions of an unknown, exotic world and beautifully constructed prose, Lord Jim is considered one of Conrad's greatest works.

About the Author-
Joseph Conrad (1857 - 1924) is regarded as one of the greatest novelists of the English language. He wrote stories and novels, many with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of an impassive, inscrutable universe. His narrative style and anti-heroic characters have influenced many authors, including T.S. Eliot, William Faulkner, and Graham Greene. Many films have been adapted from, or inspired by, Conrad's works, including Francis Coppola's Apocalypse Now, which was inspired by Heart of Darkness.

September 28, 2015 Conrad’s classic tale of one man’s desperate search for atonement is brought to life through an exceptional reading by Jerrom. The title character is a first mate on the small steamer Patna. A romantic, Jim holds dreams of being a hero. Those dreams are dashed when a disaster causes the crew to abandon the ship, with hundreds of passengers on board left to their own demise. Jim is subsequently brought to trial and stripped of his officer’s certificate, and the stigma of being a coward follows him, preventing him from finding any kind of peace. Jerrom delivers this story with the ease of an excellent after-dinner raconteur. His reading is relaxed, comfortable, and compelling. He expertly pulls the listener through Conrad’s dense intellectual ruminations to reveal a rich, multilayered novel about a person’s need, whatever the cost, for self-respect.
Conrad's haunting story of adventure turned tragedy portrays a young man's struggle against his own weaknesses. Because of its complex characters, shifting settings and roving points of view, Lord Jim needs an attentive and insightful narrator. Nigel Graham is just such a performer. Keeping a cool, steady tone, Graham captures the excitement and terror of the story. Listeners are lead in and out of grueling psychological sketches which run side by side with scenes of intense characterizations and action. Graham handles all with expertise.
